LEAL SENADO (Municipal Hall)In former times in the Leal Senado was vested the government of the Colony which was carried on by the Senators in conjunction with the Governor or Captain-General and the Ovidor (Chief Justice). In 1835 a new colonial regime supplanted this mode of Government, and with the appointment of a Civil Governor, in the Senate was vested solely the municipal administration of the Colony. At the entrance hall of the Senate may be seen the following historical inscription: – Cidade do Nome de Deus não há outra mais Leal. (City of the Name of God, there is none more loyal”). This inscription was placed by command of King D. João IV at the restoration of the Portuguese Monarchy in recognition of the loyalty of the city of Macao. When the King of Spain usurped the throne of Portugal in the 16th Century , Macao was the only Portugueses Colony over which the banners of Portugal continue to fly. Installed in the walls of the hall- way may be seen stone tablets connected with the story of Macao, gathered from all parts of the colony.
